Is Bigger Better? A Larger iPhone Could Be In the Works

Although it’s not officially confirmed, rumor has it that there’s a new Apple product in the works. You’ve probably just gotten used to your new iPhone, so of course that means it might soon be time for the California-based tech company to unveil an even newer version to the market. And this time, bigger means better, according to sources familiar with the product development.

If the whispers turn out to be true, the two newest versions of the iPhone will be the company’s largest phones with screen sizes measure 5.5 inches and 4.7 inches, respectively. This compares to the current iPhone 5s, which touts a 4-inch screen display. The newer phones would also be rounder and thinner than previous models.

These new phones would rival other larger-screen cellphones on the market today, especially those from Samsung and HTC Corp., which have smartphones with displays up to 5.7 inches.

According to a new global survey conducted by Accenture, size matters in the smartphone game. Out of 23,000 participants, 57 percent said they plan to buy a new smartphone in the next year. For those making the upgrade, 48 percent intend to buy a model with a 5- to 7-inch screen. The surge for bigger smartphones, known as “phablets” (or a combination of “phone” and “tablet”) has given companies running Google’s Android software an edge in past years. But it looks like Apple might be working to close the gap.

Production of the phones could begin in China as early as next month, and they are expected to be on shelves by the fall. Apple fans can also anticipate the release of the new iOS8 around the same time, which is supposed to feature updates to enhance integration across Apple platforms.

What do you think about the larger-screened phones? What else would you want to see in a new iPhone? Tell us by taking our survey below, and find out what other readers think!
